Day 17 on the Champix

Every one warned me about the ‘bad dreams’ I would be having on Champix, well I had a weird one the other night.  I dreamt I was at the Royal wedding and Adam Clayton (U2) burnt my dress with a cigarette, he then handed me his new born baby (who had the head of an adult and the body of a baby) the baby then proceeded to grow really quickly in front of my eyes until it turned into a Gay air stewart!!  It then turned out I knew the babys best friend who was an air stewart in Cape Verde!! Weird!!

I did smoke 4 cigarettes on Saturday night last.  I am very disappointed with myself.  I was drinking and tempted and I thought I would feel sick but alas no it felt wonderful, they were the nicest 4 cigarettes I have ever smoked in my life. I was on a first date and feeling very confident with myself and the big head took over.

Today is Tuesday and I am determined not to smoke.  I have just had a Champix nowand feel very sick to my stomach.

More soon!

I have been sick as a dog today.  It’s day 13 on the Champix.  Getting sick on the side of the street 5 times on my way to the shops, not plesant (but good for the auld weight loss).  I haven’t posted until now as I dont really notice many changes but the last couple of days have changed all that.  Initially the main side effect for me is the insomnia – I cannot sleep until 2:00 am and its been getting worse, every night it’s an hour later,  last night it was 5:30 when I eventually got to sleep so consequentially I am not getting up until 2 pm or later.   I am tired all the time.  At night I am also sweating a lot.  New pjs every night.

I normally drink a lot of water, usually about 2 litres or more a day, it’s an old (but good) habit…

I normally drink a lot of water, usually about 2 litres or more a day, it’s an old (but good) habit from living in Cape Verde, West Africa that thankfully I have continued now that I am back in Ireland.  Since starting the champix I am very dry in the mouth and thirsty all the time.   Last night I awoke 5 times to go to the loo!!  This does not help when you are trying very hard to sleep.

Probably for me one of the main advantages of Champix is that it has allowed me to continue smoking.   I then make up my own mind on which day between day 8 – 14 to actually stop smoking.  I didn’t actually decide on a day and just ‘went with the flo’ so yesterday I had a half a cigarette and the same the day before.  Prior to that I was smoking like a chimney,  drum lite tobacco and then decided to ‘treat’ myself to a packet of Marlboro Lights but offered a few around the local pub the other night and suddenly had an empty packet (think I smoked about 6).    I was then giving out to myself for not getting a packet of Carolls, why did I get a lighter brand than the one I actually wanted, Guilt???  Today I havent smoked so far but would’nt mind but am a bit afraid having puked up all over Fairview Bridge earlier.

To sum up I feel sweaty, nauseous, tired, irritable and generally pissed off.  But happy with myself for doing this and DELIGHTED that so far it seems to be working.

I have decided to get off my fat ass and do a bit of writing this year! so here goes my Champix diary.  Champix is a drug perscribed to those to help them stop smoking.  I am not even sure if its illigal to write about a drug on a blog but as I have no money whatsoever sue me if you bloody want.  I am 43 years of age and have been a smoker since I was around 17 years of age or whatever age I was when Rocky the first movie came out.  Fiona Whity (rip) my best friend and her then boyfriend Colm and myself and a few others were at the flicks in Wexford and I took my first pull of a fag.  From there on in it was ‘ten Carolls and a box of matches’.  I did stop smoking in 2003 for a year and a half having been to an Alan Carr seminar at the Red Cow Hotel but then organised a corporate event for a Government agency and was back on the roll ups as quick as you could say ‘bastard pen pushers’.  Today I took my first Champix tablet.  The idea is that you continue to smoke whilst on the drug however there are a few side effects including:  Very common: Headache, difficulty sleeping, abnormal dreams, nausea.  Common side effects include:  Increased appitite, changes in the way things taste, dry mouth, sleepnesss, tiredness, dizzyness, vomiting, constipation, diarrhorea, feeling bloated, stomach discomfort, indigestion and farting!  Uncommon side effects include:  chest infection, discomfort or pain, inflammation of the sinuses, fever, feeling cold, feeling weak or unwell, viral infection, shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness, throat pain and irriation, congested sinuses, runny nose, snoring, loss of appetite (as if), feeling thirsty, increase weight, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, feeling of panic, difficulty thinking, mood swings, tremor, difficulty with coordination, difficulty with speech, less sensitive to touch, increased muscle tension, restlessness, hearth rhythm disturbances, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, disturbed vision, eyeball discolouration, eye pain, dilated pupils, shortsightedness, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, ringing in the ears, blood in vomit, irriated stomack and hearburn, abdominal pain. abnormal stools, red blood in stools, belching, mouth ulcers, pain in the gums, coated tongue, skin rash, cyst, fungal infection, reddering of hte skin, itching, acne, increased sweating, chest wall and rib pain, stiff joings, muscle spasms, clucose in urine, increased urine volume and frequency, increased menstrual flow, vaginal discharge, changes in sex drive or ability.  The rare side effect is stroke or heart attack.

I mean really is smoking that bad for you??? when you consider most of the side effects written above its probably better to stay smoking.

Anyhow I am determined to STOP, my cough is just terrible, I stink of cigarettes, my house stinks of cigarettes, my fingers are yellow, my lung pains me (yes I hate to admit this but its the truth), I have to stop for my own good.  I was at a party last night and when some of the smokers came in from the smoking area I could smell the stink of cigarettes on them and realised thats exactly how I smell when I have had a cigarette.  I am currently smoking Drum light which in a smokers term is suppose to be better for you as it has no chemicals etc but really its a pain in the arse trying to roll a ciggie in the rain and cold outside.

When I was off the cigarettes in the past I was a right pain in the arse, a very bad non smoker.  My sister rang me one night and I could hear her smoking at the other end of the phone and started roaring at her that she was a selfish bitch to be smoking in front of me lol.  God knows what I will be like this time but if my cough eases and my lungs improve I will be a happy camper.

Today is tablet No 1 which I took at 2pm this afternoon.  So far I have been a little hungry and have eaten two beef sandwiches and had a cry. (I am a big hungover aswell so that might account for the beef sandwiches!!)  I will try and write a daily diary on my struggle to give up the fags.
